What’s New on Social? | May 2021 Roundup

We’re almost halfway through 2021, but things on social media keep getting better. Instagram brightens up Reel Creators with more bonuses, LinkedIn’s Transparency Report shows astounding results, Twitter tries its Super Followers feature, TikTok takes another step for online security, and Pinterest ventures into live streaming.

All of May’s noteworthy events are jam-packed in this edition of Tulumi’s May 2021 Social Media Roundup. Let’s begin.

Instagram Works on Better Payment Options for Reel Creators

Reel Creators, assemble! Your creative ideas will pay off soon. App researcher Alessandro Paluzzi discovered the Bonuses feature for Instagram Reels. As of writing, Instagram hasn’t made a formal announcement about this feature. Nonetheless, Creator account-holders can see this feature on the Creator’s tab.

The Bonuses feature takes similarity to Snapchat’s Spotlight payouts. However, more details are yet to come as we await Instagram’s formal announcement. Moreover, rival Snapchat may respond to Instagram’s copycat move. In this scenario, it only benefits one group, the creators. Instagram still has more than 500 million daily active users and is still way ahead of Snapchat.

LinkedIn’s Reports Decrease in Fake Profiles, Increase in Harassment

LinkedIn published its Community Transparency Report for the second half of 2020, dating from July 1 to December 31. The professional social network is proud to announce that its automated defenses detected 98.3 percent of fake accounts while 1.7 percent were done with manual review. They were also able to remove 11.6 million accounts at registration.

The report also shows that the top category for content removal is harassment and bullying, with more than 157,000 posts removed. Second in line is misinformation (110,742 removals) and violent and graphic content (22,248 removals). Moreover, copyright removal requests have a 99.96 percent approval rate.

Twitter Tests’ Super Followers’ Feature, Announces Ticketed Spaces

Following the Super, Followers feature announcement, social media giant Twitter now tests this feature on the app. Engineer and blogger Jane Manchun Wong posted this on her Twitter account, showing the Supper Followers count beside the followers count. This new Super Followers display count enables Twitter creators more monetization options from supporters.

Moreover, Twitter’s Spaces is giving more monetization opportunities for creators. The company announced “Ticketed Spaces.” Twitter also said that creators would take home 80 percent of revenues after app store fees. There’s still no update regarding the pricing, but Twitter is said to partner with Stripe for ticketing convenience.

TikTok Tightens Up Online Security with New Bulk Comment Deletion, Reporting Tools

A few months ago, TikTok responded to online misinformation. Now, they are giving more safety by giving more tools for online security. In addition, TikTok’s Director of Product, Trust, and Safety Joshua Goodman announced that they are letting content creators “bulk delete” comments on their videos.

In a statement posted on May 20, 2021, Goodman said

… We’re introducing the ability to delete multiple comments at once or report them for potentially violating our Community Guidelines. Accounts that post bullying or other negative comments can now be blocked in bulk, too. We hope this update helps creators feel more empowered over their experience on TikTok.”

Moreover, TikTok says that this feature will be available to certain markets on May 20 and globally over the coming weeks.

Pinterest Tests’ Live Streaming Feature’ in a Creator Event

Social media rivals have been digging gold mines from live streaming revenues, and Pinterest takes its shot in this feature. Last May 24-26, Pinterest hosted a live event using its live streaming feature via the app. Pinterest creators were invited to present at studio-style setups to entice its users to await the global launch of this feature.
